Pakistan and Turkiye Strengthen Bilateral Ties Amid Regional Tensions

ISTANBUL: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Turkiye on Sunday as part of a four-nation diplomatic mission, where he engaged in discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and expressing appreciation for Turkiye’s support during recent conflicts with India.

During their meeting, both leaders reiterated their commitment to addressing each other’s fundamental concerns, notably the long-standing Kashmir issue, and emphasized the importance of solidarity in regional matters. They also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to the affected populations.

Sharif outlined his vision for increased collaboration, advocating for investment in several key sectors including renewable energy, information technology, defense manufacturing, infrastructure, and agriculture. He underscored the potential for joint ventures that could boost economic partnerships between the two nations.

The discussions also included a review of previous agreements made during the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) session held earlier this year in Islamabad, with both leaders setting a goal to achieve an annual bilateral trade target of $5 billion.

Accompanying the Prime Minister was Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, alongside other government officials, who collectively expressed gratitude for the steadfast support extended by the Turkish government and its people during Pakistan’s recent challenges. Sharif commended Turkiye’s principled position and the goodwill shown by Turkish citizens, recognizing it as a source of strength for Pakistan.

In a gesture reflecting the significance of their partnership, both leaders conducted a delegation-level meeting to explore further avenues for cooperation. Upon his arrival, Sharif was welcomed by Turkish officials, including Defense Minister Yashar Guler, who underscored the importance of this visit in reinforcing diplomatic ties.

Following his stay in Turkiye, Prime Minister Sharif is scheduled to visit Iran, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan, where he plans to hold extensive discussions on various issues, including regional cooperation and the aftermath of recent tensions with India. The visit to Tajikistan will culminate in his participation in the International Conference on Glaciers, highlighting Pakistan’s focus on environmental and climate-related challenges.

This diplomatic tour comes in the wake of a recent ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India, facilitated by the United States, following a brief military standoff. The challenges in the region necessitate ongoing dialogue and collaboration as Pakistan seeks to strengthen its international relationships.
